When someone sits down to answer our questions about a person they've lost, they aren't filling out a form. They're sharing things they've never written down before. The way their father laughed. The smell of their mother's kitchen. The exact words someone said on a Tuesday that they've carried ever since.
That kind of sharing deserves genuine care — not a privacy policy nobody reads, and not a vague promise that your information is "safe with us."
So here is the full picture: what TreulogyAI collects, what we deliberately don't collect, what happens to your memories, and why we made every choice we did.
We collect as little as possible — on purpose
From the person creating a tribute, we collect a first name (or whatever name you go by) and an email address. That's it for account setup.
For the person the tribute is for, we never ask for a last name. We ask for the name most people called them — which might be a nickname, a first name, or something only family would recognize. We ask this way because it's the name that belongs in a eulogy, and because we don't need identifying information beyond that.
Fields for birthplace and birthdate include a prompt: use a placeholder if you prefer. "Hometown" instead of a city. "Birthdate" instead of a specific date. If you're not comfortable sharing that information, approximate is always fine.
The cause of death field is entirely optional. We include it because it can help set the tone — a sudden loss reads differently than a long illness. But if you leave it blank, or write something simple like "he passed away in May," that's enough. You'll never be pushed to share more than you want to.
And the guided questions themselves — the memories and stories that form the heart of a tribute — are all optional except two. We ask who is delivering the eulogy and their relationship to the person who passed, because it genuinely improves the output. Everything else is an invitation, not a requirement.
Your stories stay yours
The content TreulogyAI generates belongs to you. The eulogy, the obituary, the funeral program, the memorial post — we generate them from your memories, and then they're yours to use however you need.
We retain only a narrow technical license to process your content through our AI tool and deliver it back to you. That's the extent of it.
One thing worth being specific about: not everything you enter is sent to the AI. When you set up a tribute — preferred name, pronouns, relationship, photo — that information stays in our secure application. It's not included in what goes to the AI writing tool. Only the narrative memories and stories you choose to share are processed for content generation.
The photo you upload works the same way. It appears within your tribute as something to look at while you write — a visual anchor. It's never sent to the AI, and it's not shared anywhere outside your tribute.
And cause of death information — if you do share it — is handled with particular care. It’s used to inform the tone of your tribute, and nothing more. Our team may occasionally access tribute content to review output quality, but this is done with discretion, and cause of death is never something shared or referenced outside that context.
The AI we use, and what it does with your words
TreulogyAI uses OpenAI's API to generate tribute content. We chose the API specifically — not a consumer tool — because of how it handles data.
OpenAI does not use API inputs and outputs to train its models. The memories and stories you share through TreulogyAI are not used to train AI. This is meaningfully different from consumer tools like ChatGPT, where inputs may be used for training depending on your settings. When you use TreulogyAI, you're using a professional API connection with a different set of commitments.
OpenAI does retain API inputs for up to 30 days for safety monitoring purposes, after which they are deleted. We've disclosed this in our Privacy Policy because you deserve to know it.
No tracking. No pixels. No advertising cookies.
TreulogyAI uses Fathom Analytics to understand how our website is being used. Fathom is cookieless — it sets no cookies, tracks no one across websites, and collects no personally identifiable information. That's why you've never seen a cookie consent banner on treulogy.com. There's nothing to consent to.
We don't use Google Analytics. We don't run advertising retargeting. We have not installed tracking pixels from Pinterest, Meta, TikTok, X, or any other social platform on any TreulogyAI page or inside the application.
We made these choices deliberately, because people navigating grief deserve to do so without their behavior being tracked and fed into an ad system.
Who can see what you share
Our team does not routinely read the memories and stories you share. Access to tribute content is limited to situations where it’s genuinely needed — responding to a deletion request, resolving a technical issue, complying with a legal obligation, or reviewing output quality. When that happens, it’s handled with the same care you’d expect for something this personal.
You're informed of this before you generate any content — it's part of the acknowledgment you accept before your first generation. We think that transparency matters, so we put it at the moment it's most relevant rather than buried in a document.
How long we keep your tribute
Tributes are stored for 12 months from the date of creation. At the 11-month mark, you'll receive an email letting you know the deletion date is approaching, with two options:
- Free annual renewal — extend storage for another 12 months at no cost, with your consent
- Lifetime archive — preserve your tribute permanently for a one-time fee of $19.99
If you choose neither, your tribute and all associated content is permanently and securely deleted at 12 months. Deletion is irreversible — we don't keep a copy.
You can also request deletion at any time, before the 12-month mark, by emailing legal @ treulogy.com. We'll remove your account and tribute content within 30 days.
The technical layer — because it matters
Tribute content lives in our secure application environment, hosted on Bubble.io, which holds SOC 2 Type II certification — a recognized independent security standard for cloud software.
All data is transmitted using HTTPS/TLS encryption. Your account uses single-use, time-limited magic links for access rather than passwords — which means there's no password to be guessed, stolen, or reused.
Payment is handled entirely by Shopify’s checkout, a PCI-compliant platform. We never see or store your card information. Shopify handles both personal and professional subscription payments — and has no access to any family or tribute data at any point.
A note on what we can't promise
No system is perfectly secure, and we won't tell you otherwise. What we can tell you is that we've made deliberate choices at every level — what to collect, what to avoid collecting, which tools to use, how long to keep data — with your privacy as the primary consideration.
The data you share is processed by a US-based AI provider. We've been transparent about that above, and in our Privacy Policy. If you have concerns about international data processing, we'd rather you know that clearly than discover it later.
